Self-defence isn’t just about physical techniques; it begins with setting clear boundaries and diffusing situations before they escalate. In my training sessions, I’ll teach you to recognise potential threats early, communicate assertively, and handle confrontations with confidence and calm.

While I teach the essential physical skills, my approach goes beyond the basics. I focus strongly on de-escalation and boundary management, because self-defence truly starts before a conflict ever turns physical. My sessions will help you:

• Spot and avoid danger early

• Manage personal boundaries

• De-escalate conflicts with confidence

• Learn the skills to use force efficiently

Before pursuing self-defence coaching, I had a long career in advertising as an art director, alongside a strong interest in fitness that led me to teach both strength and circuit training. I began my self-defence coaching journey with Krav Maga in 2003 as a pastime. It has since become a career path I love—one that continues to inspire me as I witness the positive changes it brings to those I teach.

For the past 15 years, I’ve run a workshop to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.

This year we are going on hold, but in 2026 I will be launching some new training programmes, kicking off with a FREE event in January, so watch this space.

I had a student visit me from another club.

During a striking drill, I asked why she wasn’t using her fist to punch. “My coach said an open palm was more appropriate for a woman, not a fist.”

Sarah silently screamed.

Did this instructor’s viewpoint stem from beliefs about fighting techniques or perceived differences in strength? Or…

Where are my smelling salts?

Everyone has the right to learn and practise all self-defence techniques. Limiting techniques based on gender is not only outdated but also disempowering. Why limit your students unnecessarily?

YES, technique matters: Proper punching technique requires good wrist alignment and solid body mechanics. With dedicated coaching, anyone can learn to punch safely and effectively. Technique matters, but it should be tailored to each individual based on mechanics, not restricted by gender.

In self-defence situations, knowing how to punch effectively can be vital. We can suggest that different actions may work better for people based on their limitations; not forgetting intent and context of any threatening situation play a massive part in how we respond, so a punch may not always be appropriate!

And if we are working with limitations of size and strength, why limit even more? Tell a student what they can do, not what they can’t do.

Effective self-defence incorporates a range of techniques tailored to the individual’s skills and the situation. There is no one-size-fits-all approach; empowerment lies in choice and training that respects individual strengths. Don’t take skills away.

This photo was taken during one of my last sessions, where we explored conflict, all be it with a different focus…

Boundary Management - specifically in the workplace.
Why: In short, when boundaries are set at work, employees can focus better on their tasks without unnecessary interruptions. Also encourages a culture of respect and improves morale.

During the session, participants explored boundary setting in both personal and professional life, reminding them of their strengths and capabilities. We covered:

• Body Language: Techniques for self-improvement and recognising behaviours in others.

• Active Listening: The significance of taking time to assess situations and respond calmly.

• Language Recognition: Identifying challenging or dismissive language.

• Verbal Skills: Solutions for effective communication. Particularly of the above!

• Physical Skills: Boundary-setting exercises supplemented with self-defence drills that promote confidence and team building.

And, as I always add, fun too.

Do you need to take a test? After all the training is about keeping yourself safe.

Well, there are several reasons why taking a level exam may be important.
Though there are plenty who don’t, and are skilled practitioners who train regularly.

* First, it lets you assess your skill level and progress. This can guide you on what areas you need to improve on and what techniques you have mastered.
* Second, it gives you a clear goal to work towards.
* Third, passing the test gives you a sense of accomplishment and pride in your skills.After all, it is a tangible recognition of your hard work and dedication.

I love my job, particularly when I get to collaborate, and I had such a fantastic time last week running a self-defence session with @echelonselfdefence

Forget book club, we ran a session for a group of women that met regularly; to go to exhibitions or try new skills, and then go for lunch! They chose self-defence, not sure where they went for lunch.

We spent two and a half hours of drills, mixing skills and answering questions.

Two and a half hours of no nonsense self-defence.

Everyone left with smiles and a little more confidence.

Silly question?

I ask it, when introducing the subject of physical self-protection.

It breaks the ice and gives me insight into the group, but it’s really about encouraging critical thinking.

Seriously, we may have a ‘mental’ list of people who have done us wrong, and whom we might like to introduce to a punch, but the answer is a hard NO.

How so? When dealing with verbal and physical threats, a punch may not always be the best response in managing conflict, consider :

First things first: the law. In many places, self-defence laws are pretty straightforward. You must genuinely believe you’re in immediate danger to justify your actions. If you respond with excessive force, you could face legal repercussions. Not cool.

Let’s talk about escalation. Responding physically can often escalate a situation rather than resolve it. Verbal communication or simply walking away can be far more effective in diffusing tension.

Taking a deep breath can help you calm down and think more clearly before you react.

Proportionality

So your response should be proportional to the threat( back to self-defence and the law). If the attacker poses a serious threat of harm, a punch or more might be justified.

Think about whether your reaction matches the situation.

Intent and context is the biggie for me.
Depending on the intent and context of the situation, hitting may not be appropriate for other reasons.

Ask yourself: Will I see this person again? Friend, work colleague or family. Does my job or relationship limit how I respond?

Good self-defence skills should include all safety aspects and focus on avoiding conflict whenever possible. While throwing a punch might be necessary in some cases, it’s important to think about the situation, the law, and what could happen next.

School exam time is here again!

During the exam period, a few students skip training but a fair few turn up because they recognise coming to class is a welcome break and a good opportunity to stress bust.

Around this time I make sure the classes are fast and energetic and full of exercise drills and striking combinations to give kids a break from exam pressure.

Top tips for dealing with exam stress.
1. Eat a well-balanced diet and don’t forget to hydrate (drink water)
2. Don’t fuel up on sweets or sugary drinks for quick fix energy bursts - while we are on the subject, do not come to class with a can of these either!
3. Switch off gadgets and get a good night’s sleep
4. Plan your revision - Take breaks.
5. If you need it, ask for help - from a teacher, friend, or member of your family
6. Take exercise! So do come to class.
7. Make time for things you enjoy, see point 6.😬
